Supplementary Sulcus Lenses

What is a Supplementary Sulcus Lens?

Advantages of Supplementary Sulcus Lenses

Supplementary Sulcus lenses or Sulcus lenses for short, are highly versatile secondary or piggyback lenses that are implanted after cataract surgery of a refractive lens replacement. Sulcus lenses are implanted in front of the primary intraocular lens and behind the iris and pupil and is therefore invisible.

  • Correct outcome errors following cataract surgery
  • Change the outcome of cataract surgery ie when a patient changes their mind at what range they want to see clearly
  • Give multifocality in cases where a monofocal lens was implanted as a primary lens implant
  • Multifocal sulcus lenses give patients excellent distance, computer and dashboard vision as well as the ability to read without glasses
  • Much safer option than a lens exchange where errors occurred following cataract surgery
  • It prevents the need for laser surgery following cataract surgery where the outcome is not optimal
  • It can give a patient multifocality with vision from near to far in cases where distance only monofocal lenses where originally implanted
  • It is an extremely easy procedure as I do not have to remove anything from the eye
  • The power calculation of a sulcus lens is much more predictable than that of a lens that needs to be exchanged
  • The procedure is reverseable
  • Sulcus lenses can correct a wider range than what is possible with laser eye surgery after cataract or refractive lens replacement surgeries
  • The long term outcomes are more stable than laser eye surgery after cataract or refractive lens replacement surgeries
  • Secondary sulcus lenses can treat low or extremely high degrees of astigmatism

Sulcus Lens Surgery Steps:

I prefer doing the surgery under local anaesthesia and sedation as patients have already undergone eye surgery and knows what to expect from a procedure that is very similar to their original cataract or lens replacement surgery.

I operate one eye at a time in a private day surgery facility. Recovery is at home.
