Implantable Collamer Lens - ICL

What is an Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL)?

ICL suitability criteria:

Advantages of ICL surgery:

  • An ICL is a highly specialised thin, clear lens that is permanently placed inside your eye behind the iris.
  • The ICL sits behind your pupil and in front of your natural lens and works exactly the same as traditional contact lenses but with the benefit that it is inside of the eye.
  • Because of the tiny size and softness, it can be folded up so small that it can be injected into your eye in seconds through a tiny 3mm hole on the side of your cornea.
  • Once injected, the ICL unfolds and is placed into position and there it stays correcting your eyesight without further treatment.
  • The ICL does not alter any structures within the eye and your natural lens is NOT removed.
  • An ICL can be easily removed or replaced if required and is a reversable procedure.
  • It is a perfect solution for people with extreme short or far-sightedness.
  • The ICL can correct high degrees of near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism.
  • An ICL is the treatment of choice in patients that are not suitable for laser eye surgery.
  • ICL surgery is performed in a day surgery facility and your eyes are typically operated on the same day.

ICL Surgery steps:

I prefer doing the surgery under general anaesthesia as patients are generally young and healthy.

I operate both eyes on the same day in a private day surgery facility. Recovery is at home.
