What are the symptoms of Keratoconus?

Potential complications of keratoconus include:

  • Corneal scarring
  • Vision that cannot be corrected with glasses anymore
  • Corneal hydrops: Your cornea swells up with fluid suddenly
  • Fleischer rings: Iron deposits cause rings within your cornea
  • Vision Loss. Vision loss can be mild or severe

How is keratoconus treated?

I always try to treat the cornea in such a way that the vision can be best corrected with glasses. That is why I always go out of my way and endeavour to spare a patient’s own cornea. My main aim is to ALWAYS try and prevent a corneal transplant. I live by the motto that "there is no better cornea on the market than your own!"

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea (the clear tissue in the front of the eye). Keratoconus causes a thinning of the central cornea and eventual bulging which in turn causes vision loss. It usually affects both eyes.

What causes keratoconus?

What are the symptoms of Keratoconus?

The simple answer is: we don’t know but there are several risk factors:

  • Eye rubbing
  • Asthma
  • Family history
  • Genetic disorders like Down syndrome
  • Severe allergies
  • Certain medical conditions affecting connective tissues eg. Ehlers Danlos syndrome
  • Gradually worsening vision in one or both eyes
  • Spectacle prescriptions changing rapidly
  • Double vision when you look out of just one eye
  • Haloes and glare around car lights
  • General sensitivity to bright light
  • Having vision that gradually becomes distorted. Straight lines might look bent, and objects don’t have their correct shape
