Types of CXL

  • Epi-off CXL where the surface layer cells of the cornea are removed
  • Epi-on CXL where the surface cells are NOT removed. Epi-on CXL is usually reserved for very thin corneas

What happens during corneal cross-linking?

During the CXL procedure, I will:

  • Numb your eye with anaesthetic drops
  • Remove or the top layer of your cornea (epi-off CXL)
  • Apply riboflavin eye drops and allow it to soak in
  • Direct a beam of focused UV light onto your cornea
  • Apply antibiotic and steroid eye drops
  • Cover the eye with a temporary medical contact lens

Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking

Corneal Collagen Cross-linking or CXL is a minimally invasive laser.

It is used to harden a cornea with ultra-violet light and riboflavin (Vitamin B12) drops to prevent further progression of keratoconus.

How does CXL work?

Advantages of CXL

During corneal cross-linking, a focused beam of UV light on the cornea helps to strengthen collagen bonds in your cornea

Here I am performing CXL painlessly on a patient in the convenience of our procedure room

  • The procedure is done in my procedure room takes less 20 minutes
  • There is no need to undergo CXL in a hospital
  • The whole procedure is completely painless
  • First, Riboflavin pigment drops is applied to your cornea for a few minutes
  • Then a UV light is used is shone on the eye
  • The riboflavin and UV light “Cross” react; “Linking” the tissue bonds of your cornea and thereby hardening it
  • The patient’s cornea becomes rock hard and stops keratoconus progression
  • he whole procedure is painless
  • Your uncorrected vision can improve due to the flattening effect of CXL
  • The patient retains their own cornea
  • The patient maintains their vision corrected by glasses
  • It is safe to perform the procedure on children and young patients to prevent vision loss due to keratoconus
