What is Presbyond Laser Blended Vision?

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision at a glance

Is Presbyond right for you?

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is especially well suited for people with a very busy and active lifestyle who often find that reading glasses are not convenient at all.

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is effective for treating patients with presbyopia who also have other refractive errors like near-sightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

In order to find out if you are suitable for Presbyond Laser Blended Vision ,your personal vision requirements and expectations are important factors. That is why I will ask questions about your hobbies, your daily activities and other aspects that might affect the decision and your suitability.

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is customised for each individual patient. Apart from our standard laser assessment I will also perform a detailed eye examination which includes a dilated retinal exam. The nature and degree of your spectacle error, curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors play a role. Your tolerance level for the difference that will be induced between the eyes and ocular dominance will also be tested.

I will then personally advise you as to whether a treatment with Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is right for you.

Benefits and advantages of Presbyond Laser Blended Vision:

  • Clear and continuous vision from near to far.
  • Dependence on glasses is significantly reduced.
  • In most cases patients do not need glasses at any range anymore.
  • Reading without reading glasses.
  • 97% of presbyopic patients are suitable for Presbyond Laser Blended Vision.
  • Presbyond can be CUSTOMISED to each patient’s visual requirements.
  • No glare and haloes at nighttime unlike with multifocal lenses.
  • No loss of depth perception unlike with mono-vision.
  • No loss of contrast sensitivity or quality of vision unlike with multifocal lenses.
  • Presbyond is completely reversable.
  • The surgery is non-invasive and pain free.
  • There is no risk of going blind unlike with lens extraction surgeries with multifocal lenses.
  • There is no risk of retinal detachments unlike with lens extraction surgeries with multifocal lenses.
  • There is no risk for infections inside the eye unlike with lens extraction surgeries with multifocal lenses.
  • There is no loss of the remaining focussing ability of the eyes as the lenses are not removed. This further enhances the effect of Presbyond.
  • Reading is faster and easier than with reading glasses

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision offers many extra advantages – specifically, customized treatments that result in vision in focus at all distances. Presbyond Laser Blended Vision represents the next stage in eye care excellence. Even though it is far superior to mono-vision, it uses its principles of one eye that is primarily corrected for distance vision, while the other eye is corrected for near vision. There is a significant difference however: it uses your binocular vision by fine-tuning the depth of field of each eye individually, creating a customized fusion of the two images in the intermediate zone – the Blend Zone using normal optical phenomena known as spherical aberrations. Spherical aberrations are natural and used to enhance the depth of vision.

  • The unique “Blend Zone” makes it easier for the brain to maintain its binocular vision by merging the images of both eyes for your normal 3 dimensional vision.
  • Most patients experience an immediate improvement and adapt very quickly to their new vision.
  • In addition, the procedure is tolerated by the vast majority of patients – up to 97% of patients can adapt to Presbyond.
  • Another huge advantage of Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is that it maintains a patient’s natural contrast sensitivity or quality of vision.
  • It also preserves the patient’s depth perception very well.

BEWARE OF FAKE ADVERTISING OF “BLENDED VISION”

I am currently the only surgeon in Western Australia who have the laser equipment and extensive specialised training to perform Presbyond Laser Blended Vision. Presbyond and Laser Blended Vision is proprietary to the laser equipment I use from Zeiss and can only be performed at Crystal Eye and Laser Centre. Other “Presby-Laser” products are extremely dangerous as they change the cornea in such a way that patients loose best corrected vision. THERE IS NO RECORDED CASE OF PRESBYOND CAUSING ANY CORRECTED VISION LOSS.

Presbyond suitability criteria:

How does Presbyond Blended Vision work?

  • Standard LASIK is performed to correct both eyes differently to induce a range of vision from near to distance
  • The dominant eye is corrected mostly for distance and a little for near
  • The non-dominant eye is corrected mostly for near and a little for distance
  • The vision in both eyes overlap known as the “Blend Zone”
  • The patient has continuous vision from near, intermediate to distance
  • Presbyond does require brain adaptation between 4 to 6 months
  • The vast majority of patients are fully adapted by 4 months post-surgery
  • The brain compensates for the slight difference and overlap in both eyes almost instantly, combining the two images to give much greater depth of vision
  • Presbyond maintains the quality of vision (known as contrast sensitivity) of an eye
  • The patient maintains depth perception

Presbyond is NOT mono-vision:

Most conventional treatment methods for presbyopia, both surgical as well as contact lens treatments – use the principle of monovision: one eye is corrected for distance and the other eye for near vision. Unfortunately, a number of patients are unable to get used to the mono-vision as there is no “Blend Zone”.

Because of a lack of a “Blend Zone” , a monovision correction leaves a bigger gap between the range of vision of each eye. This is known as the “Blur Zone”. The depth of field is comparatively smaller than that provided by Laser Blended Vision. Essentially, instead of a blend zone, monovision can often create a blur zone. This gives either poor near or intermediate vision and in most cases glasses are still needed at a specific range.

Presbyond induces spherical aberrations which are natural optical phenomena that all humans have in their eyes. This reduces the difference between the 2 eyes significantly, increasing tolerance, and providing continuous good vision from near through intermediate, to distance vision.

Laser Blended Vision is a sophisticated laser eye surgery that uses optical modifications that compensates for presbyopia, the natural aging of the eye. Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is performed as a LASIK procedure. The difference is it is designed to address both your distance vision and near vision together. In Presbyond Laser Blended Vision I intentionally correct the eyes slightly differently: one is corrected to see clearest at distance with continuous focus into the intermediate ranges and the other eye is corrected to be clearest up close at a normal reading distance with continuous focus into intermediate where it overlaps or ‘blends’ with the intermediate vision of the other eye. This is known as the ”Blend Zone”.

This means that with both eyes open, which is our normal state, you experience a continuum of good vision from a normal near working distance, through intermediate distances, all the way to far distance.

Laser Blended Vision is the most effective and safest method possible for correcting both the distance and near vision again.

  • Age-optimised Laser Eye Surgery for people with presbyopia or reading vision problems.
  • Standard LASIK is used to provide the treatment.
  • True binocular vision thanks to the unique Blend Zone.
  • Generally vision in focus at all distances: near, far and even intermediate.
  • Customized approach – individual treatment profile for each patient.

Who are good candidates for Presbyond Laser Blended Vision?

  • Pre-Presbyopic and presbyopic patients that are older than 40 years needing readers or multifocal glasses
  • Patients with busy and active lifestyles not wanting the hassle of reading or multifocal glasses
  • Patients with corrected vision of 20/20 or better
  • Patients with no other eye disease
  • Patients with realistic expectations in regards to laser eye surgery and near vision correction
  • Patients with suitable corneas to undergo LASIK

Frequently asked questions I get asked about Presbyond Laser Blended Vision:

If you are considering Presbyond laser eye surgery, you probably have many questions, especially seeing that there are so many options. I offer all forms of laser eye surgery.

Some of the most frequent questions I get asked are addressed here. This information is not intended to replace a consultation with myself and our clinical optometrist.

  • Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is special. Why?

With Presbyond Laser Blended Vision, the treatment is customized for each individual eye. Thereby, an overlapping zone (Blend Zone) in the intermediate range is created. It makes it easy for the two eyes to merge the images for normal binocular vision and enables vision in focus at all distances.

How do I know if it is suitable for me?

  • How do I know if it is suitable for me?

If you are older than 40 years and you pass our eligibility assessment you will be suitable.  Studies have shown that 97% of all presbyopic patients are suitable candidates for Presbyond. Treatment eligibility is the same as for LASIK laser eye surgery, except that the therapy is customized for each individual. You will have to undergo a detailed eye examination where the nature and degree of the spectacle error, curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors play a role. Your tolerance level for the difference acceptance between eyes are assessed and the dominance of your eyes will also be tested. I will then personally advise you as to whether Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is right for you.

  • Why do you prefer performing Presbyond instead of lens extraction surgery?

Presbyond is safer as the operation is performed on the surface of the eye instead of inside the eye like in lens extraction surgery. You cannot get retinal detachments, infections inside the eye and blindness from Presbyond which are real and serious complications associated with lens replacement surgeries. Further, the quality or contrast is not affected.  Also, Presbyond is reversable in the unlikely scenario that you do not fully adapt. Lens replacement surgeries are not reverseable.  In Presbyond the natural lens is preserved which can further help to focus images more clearly at near ranges.

  • How long will it take before I can see properly and return to my normal routine?

Every healing process is different but in most cases, visual recovery is already very good one or two days after the surgery. Your new vision normally stabilizes within a week. Brain adaptation to your new vision and slight difference between the two eyes takes 4 to 6 months.

  • Will I be able to see clearly at all distances with each eye?

With Laser Blended Vision, one eye is corrected for full distance vision and some mid-range vision, and the other eye is corrected to focus at the mid and near range. As a result, you won’t be able to see sharply at all distances if you use just one eye. Using both of your eyes however, you will achieve clear vision in focus at all distances.

  • What is the time interval between surgery for each eye?

As a rule I treat both eyes on the same day. That way, patients can fully experience the benefits of clear vision at all distances as quickly as possible.

  • What follow-up examinations may be necessary?

After your surgery, you will be given drops and other analgesic medication. Your first post-operative assessment is the day after the surgery. Further examinations are generally conducted at 6 weeks, six months and 1 year until your new vision has stabilized and full brain adaptation has occured.

  • What are the risks?

As with all medical procedures and surgery, I will go through your individual risks and possible side effects so you can decide whether Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is the most appropriate treatment option for you.
